Montessori Education Alternative

Audubon Charter School is a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. Each classroom is characterized by a multi-grade/mixed-age approach in which the teacher and a full-time teacher assistant emphasize cooperation and collaboration, not competition. Educating the "whole child" as an active and natural learner is a primary concept, one that is the responsibility of the home, school and community.

The Montessori Method has been used with great success for 100 years all over the world with children of all abilities, ethnic backgrounds, and income levels. Because each child stays with the same teacher for two to three years and a small number of classmates are new each year, the learning environment is stable and allows the teacher and students to really know and understand one another.

Classroom time is structured to give children uninterrupted work blocks to concentrate on their selected work, rather than keeping the whole class on the same chapter of a textbook at a time. Children work individually, and when appropriate, in cooperative groups. The subject matter is integrated, so that it is difficult for a child to completely avoid a less-favorite subject, and the teacher offers guidance to ensure that students do meet the required standards for their grade level. The involvement of parents is recognized as essential for creating a nurturing, family-like school environment, and thus is highly encouraged.

Success of the Montessori Method
To achieve these ends, the school employs the Montessori Method of instruction, which provides materials and an environment designed to meet each student's academic, emotional, and social needs and maximize his or her abilities. It encourages students to deepen their understanding of themselves and others through dialogue and reflection. Emphasizing academic excellence, as well as healthy social and emotional development, the school graduates students who are prepared to be effective contributors in a diverse community.

We are proud of our excellent teachers, high academic standards, committed parents and a student body that is a vibrant reflection of the people who make New Orleans the exciting and varied city it is.

Our Commitment
Audubon supports its children in their journey toward achieving their full potential. We believe the teacher's role is to nurture creativity, independent learning, and world stewardship. Audubon Charter School is committed to the development of the whole child, and fulfilling his or her intellectual, social, and physical needs.
